Collation: Paper with watermarks: scales (similar to Briquet 2444) and a bull's head with 5-petaled flower above and triangle with three dots below (Briquet 14872, produced in fifteenth-century Brescia - see Briquet III:731), fol. ii (19th-century paper and contemporary vellum) + 150 + i (19th-century paper) ; 1-1510 ; vertical catchwords in lower right corner, final verso of each quire...
Layout: One column, 36 lines. Bounding and writing lines in brown plummet.
Script: Written in a humanistic bookhand, with some ligatures and cursive tendencies, in brown ink with red rubrics.
Decoration: 10-line spaces left for initials at the beginning of each book, unfilled.
Binding: Ca.-18th-century quarter calf with red floral diamond-patterned printed paper over pasteboards, floral stamp in each spine compartment. On red lettering-pieces, "M VALERI/ MARTIAL/ EPIGRAM," and "M.S.". At tail, BPL stamp "G.31.82." On upper cover inked number "64".
Origin: Written in Lombardy in 1453. See colophon, in red, on fol. 150v.
Provenance: Owned by Jean-Baptiste-Joseph Barrois (1784-1855), his 1849 sale (no. 496) to Bertram, 4rth Earl of Ashburnham (1797-1878).
Immediate source of acquisition: Ashburnham sale, Sotheby's London, 10 June 1901, lot 380 (lot number written inside front cover) to Sydney Cockerell for the Boston Public Library (BPL bookplate inside front cover, embossed on fol. 1, Cockerell's notes inside front cover).
