Script: fol. 1r-108r written in caroline textualis formata by several hands; 108v-115r: written in caroline textualis media by several hands; fol. 1-107, headings and fold. 108-115, headings in rustic capitals. Fol. 1r and 8v, corrections by rubricator.
Decoration: fol. 20r and 28r: white vine stem initials decorated with yellow, green, and orange-red; f. 74r: white vine stem initial, uncolored; f. 90v: white vine stem initial decorated with brown and yellow; f. 14v: similar initial historiated with fantastic animal; f. 48v: initial historiated with dog, bird, and fantastic animal; f. 62r: orange-red initial decorated with green; f. 38r: red...
Origin: Written in northern Italy in the middle of the 11th century, at Novalesa, as indicated by note on fol. 107v confirming perpetual wine supply to Saint Peter's at Novalesa. Fol. 12r, 17th century marginal note confirms presence at Novalesa. Fol. 1-107v was a separate book before being bound together with fol. 108-115; notes and restoration of obliterated portions date from the 18th century.
Given by the Abbot of Novalesa in the 18th century to Eugenio de Levis.
Formerly no. 8462 in the library of Sir Thomas Phillipps.
Sold March 1821, by Thomas Thorpe to Richard Heber.
