Other Decoration: Black and red ink for nomenclature in a minuscule script with area names in display script; land masses outlined in color, islands painted gold, green, blue, or red; each chart has from 3 to 14 compass roses with usual 32 rhumb line network with black, red, and green ink for the principal directions; no latitude or longitude; unnumbered scale of distance on each chart...
Probably made ca. 1600 in France from an Italian prototype, since cities are in Italianate form while area names are in French. Probably made by a member of the Oliva family according to letter on file from H. Derek Howse of the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich.
