Indenture document (conveyance) of Samuel Ladd of Chartham, Kent, England to Thomas Jackson of the Precincts of Canterbury Cathedral for ₤400 and messuage, including cottage, 2 gardens, 2 orchards, and 3 acres of land in Chartham.
Parchment, single sheet, indented along top, with plica. Seal still attached: ball-shaped and made of red wax (30 mm diameter), pendant on parchment tag (170 mm) bearing a device (1.5 mm diameter): a winged heart. Written in an English secretary script (cursiva libraria), now badly abraded and illegible in many places. First initial "T" enlarged and flourished. Document is folded five times...
Written in England and dated 18 April, 11 Charles I (1635). Four inscriptions on the dorse: two in an English secretary hand similar to the main text and two in a later cursive hand; the name Elizabeth Ladd is mentioned along with the names Edward Nordey [sp?] and Godfrey Pyard [sp?]. Formerly Phillipps no. 31801; the number "31801" located in center of dorse. Gift of Department of History... - Keyword:
