Indenture (mortgage) between John and Elizabeth Raymond of Holstead, Essex and Dorothy Collard of Barnstone, Essex for ₤350 to John and Elizabeth Raymond for conveyance of capital messuage, Chelmeshoes house and barns, stables, dove house [etc.] and lands in great Maplest[de?] and Deetingthorp [?], Essex. Containing 66 acres. Name of John Richardson mentioned.
Parchment, single sheet, indented along top, with plica. 446 x 790 mm. Two red-wax, impressed seals (design not visible), each stamped on tags. Written in a clear mixed hand (secretary and italic conflations); opening words and later, emphasized words in larger bastard anglicana script. Pricking in both margins. 5-line flourished initial "T" opens the text. Document folded six times.
Written in England, county of Essex and dated 25 August 2 James II. Signed by John Raymond and Elizabeth Raymond on the plica next to the slits for the tags. Three inscriptions on dorse: at top center in a contemporary hand, "Sealed and delivered in the presence of ...[four signatures follow including William Collard, and John, John, and Sam (all three last names illegible)]."; at middle...
