This initial begins the Introit for the feast of Epiphany (Jan. 6), 'Ecce aduenit dominator dominus ...' (Behold the Lord the Ruler is come). It was illuminated by a follower of Duccio di Buoninsegena (ca. 1255 -1319). Duccio, as he is commonly known, is considered to be the founder of Renaissance painting in Siena.
This image shows the reverse of a leaf with an historiated initial from a gradual. This side of the leaf, the true recto, contains the versicle of the gradual for the feast of the Circumcision.
