Initial B with St. Michael Archangel slaying the Devil
This initial begins the Introit for the feast of St. Michael Archangel (Sept. 29), 'Benedicite Domino omnes angeli ejus ...' (Bless the Lord, all you angels of his).
Initial N with St. Peter in prison
This initial begins the Introit for the feast of St. Peter in Chains (Aug. 1), 'Nunc scio vere quia misit Dominus angelum suum...' (Now I can tell for certain that the Lord has sent his angel). According to the Acts of the Apostles, Peter was persecuted by Herod Agrippa and thrown into prison for preaching the Christian faith (Acts 12:1-23).
Lewis E M 28:3-5 and E M 28:7 were illuminated by a follower of Tomasino da Vimercate, an illuminator active in Milan from ca. 1390 to 1415. Until his identity was determined by documentary evidence, Tomasino was previously known as the anonymous Master of the Modena Hours after his most characteristic work in a book of hours, now in the Biblioteca Estense in Modena, Italy.
These cuttings can be dated to ca. 1400.
