This initial begins Psalm 97, 'Cantate domino canticum novum' (Sing to the Lord a new song), which praises God for his mercy and for the salvation of the world. Psalm 97, the beginning of one of the ten major divisions of the Psalms, is typically illustrated with a scene of a choir of monks. Here, however, the illuminator has chosen to emphasize the reason why the world needed to be saved...
