In this initial, St. Andrew is identified by his attribute, the saltire, or X-shaped, cross he carries underneath his left arm. According to his legend, St. Andrew was martyred by crucifixion on such a cross. He points to a scroll inscribed with the words 'Invenimus Messiam' (We have found Christ) from John 1:41.
