Layout: 1 or 2 columns, number of lines varies, approx. 26-33. Bounding and writing lines ruled in light plummet.
Script: Written by multiple scribes in various early gothic bookhands, above top line, round- and tall-s used interchangeably, in brown ink with red or underlined brown rubrics.
Decoration: 13-line initial "B" for "Beatus vir" on fol. 7 in red with white-vine infill, 2-line red capitals throughout, some initials in blue, some rubrics alternate red and brown letters.
Binding: Original(?) brown, formerly pink sheep or goatskin over boards, sewn on four split tawed leather bands, lacking clasps and bosses; may have originally had a cruciform boss on front cover, lower cover preserves end of clasps; original parchment pastedowns.
Origin: Written in northern Italy between the years 1228 (the canonization of St. Francis) and 1255 (the canonization of St. Clare, who was not originally included in the calendar, but was added in the fourteenth century).
Provenance: Owned by Franciscan scholar and biographer Paul Sabatier (1858-1928), with his notes, formerly laid in, now shelved as BPL MS 2493. Among his notes are a notice stating that the manuscript had been loaned by Sabatier to Pierre Battifol (author of L'Histoire du bréviaire romain first published in 1893) at an unknown date and then to Michel Andrieu (liturgical historian, author of...
Immediate source of acquisition: Acquired by the BPL from Sabatier's estate in 1930 along with several other manuscripts and his library of Francisciana, collectively known as the "Paul Sabatier Franciscan Collection." BPL plate inside front cover, beneath partially-detached pastedown. Manuscript inscriptions on upper lower paste downs.
