Collation: Parchment, fol. ii (contemporary parchment ) + 28 + ii (contemporary parchment) ; 1-210 38 ; modern pencil arabic foliation, upper outer corner of each recto.
Layout: Single column, 25 lines. Bounding and writing lines in light plummet.
Script: Written in the humanistic bookhand of Gritti's secretary, Petrus Grasolorrius, in brown ink.
Decoration: Two-line red epigraphic capitals in left margin throughout. Full-page frontispiece on fol. 1 of gold scrolling floriate vines with pale blue and purple flowers on a black background, the arms of the Zane family (an otter rampant) in a cartouche in the lower margin, St. Jerome (patron of the new governor) in a medallion in the right margin, a bird in flight in the left margin, and...
Binding: Original reddish-brown gilt tooled and stamped goatskin over pasteboards, paper pastedowns, blind-fillet turn-ins, ties lacking, H.Z. gilt-stamped on front cover.
Origin: Written in Venice on 23 February 1528 by the scribe Petrus Grasolorrius.
Provenance: Bound at the time of production for the grantee, Hieronymus Zane, his initials gilt-stamped on the front cover. 16th-century financial notes signed by Benetto Spinelli on fol. 30v. Sold by Hotel Druot 9 June 1881, lot 77. Manuscript 67 in the collection of Comte Chandon de Briailles (numbered on his bookplate inside front cover), his sale at Druot 2 December 1954, lot 14.
Immediate source of acquisition: Purchased by BPL in 1955 from Davis and Orioli.
