Collation: Parchment, fol. ii (parchment manuscript waste) + 24 + fol. ii (parchment manuscript waste) ; 12+1 (fol. 2, the full-page miniature, is a tipped-in singleton) 26 3-48 ; decorative catchwords, lower center margin final verso of each quire. Modern arabic pencil foliation, upper outer corner of each recto, skips fol. 23, so reaches "24" at fol. 25.
Layout: Two columns, 24 lines. Bounding and writing lines in blind.
Script: Written in a rounded gothic bookhand in brown ink with red rubrics.
Decoration: Three-line chapter initials in red or blue with blue and red filigree throughout. Full-page illsutration of St. Clare, fol. 2v, with heavy, ca. 19th-century overpainting: St. Clare enthroned against a blue background sprinkled with golden stars; above, St. Francis as an angel flanked by two angels, bearing a crown presumably intended for Clare; kneeling at her feet on either side...
Binding: Original blind-fillet calf over boards with early brass bosses, some floral tooling extant, lacking clasps, spine repaired.
Origin: Written in Bologna, likely for an order of Urbanist Poor Clares, possibly with ties to Venice. See the Beyond oOrds catalog, no. 36.
Provenance: Effaced ca. sixteenth-century inscription, fol. 25v. Sold at Sotheby's London 7 Feb. 1951, lot 274; catalogue description pasted inside front cover.
