Layout: Two columns, 53 lines. Bounding and writing lines ruled in blind. The opening of the first tract is not extant; the initial space for the second tract on fol. 52v has been left blank; and a space was not left for an initial at the opening of Tract 5 on fol. 71v.
Script: Written in a rounded gothic bookhand in brown ink with chapter headings preserved throughout only as marginal rubricator guides in a very small cramped hand; rubrics added in red in quires 8 and 10 only (fols. 65-73 and 94-103).
Decoration: Two-line initials throughout alternating blue with red filgree or red with purple; eight five-line historiated initials in gold and colors, with a few acanthus leaves and gold balls, each populated with a different bust distinguished by eight different styles of headgear, possibly representing different patients (on folio 1 and the opening of each tract of the Liber Almansoris...
Binding: French 18th-century binding of green diced Russia over heavy boards, all edges gilt, board edges filleted in blind, triple-fillet border on covers, paper pastedowns and endleaves, spine gilt in compartments, "RAZI/ ABOV/ BEKERS/ MS./ HISPAN./ SEC. XIII," French newsprint lining spine, spine detaching at front hinge, in need of repair.
Origin: Written in northern Italy in the mid-14th century. Title on spine wrongly attributes the manuscript to 13th-century Spain.
Provenance: Owned by Jean-Baptiste-Joseph Barrois (1784-1855), his 1849 sale (no. 104) to Bertram, the Fourth Earl of Ashburnham (1797-1878).
Immediate source of acquisition: Purchased at the Ashburnham sale, Sotheby's London, 10 June 1901, lot 506 (lot number written inside front cover) to Sydney Cockerell for the Boston Public Library (BPL bookplate inside front cover, embossed on fol. 1, Cockerell's notes inside front cover).
