Layout: 1 column, 7 staves. Bounding lines in red ink, doubled, with additional lines for upper, lower and outer margin. Rhythmic mensural musical notation on 5-line black staff.
Script: Written in a humanistic bookhand in black ink with red rubrics.
Decoration: Eight title pages with gilt section titles in decorative medallion frames; thirty-six 2- to 3-staff high penwork initials, throughout. Full-page penwork frontispiece of two angels kneeling at the foot of the empty cross, within an elaborate architectural frame.
Binding: 18th-century dark brown leather over original thick pasteboard, edges gauffered with remains of gilding ; headcaps cut away or perhaps never present. Covering on upper board torn, as are several layers of pastedowns inside front cover, revealing earlier (broken) sewing supports together with newer ones. Manuscript waste in spine. Title leaf, first two and last two leaves of text...
Origin: Written in Italy in the third quarter of the 16th century.
Provenance: Initial A inside front board, with pencilled name Wheatley and dealer's marks and price. In a private U.S. collection in the late 20th century.
