Layout:
Decoration: 31 historiated initials, border ornaments in the late 15th century Ferrarese style.
Artist: Written and illuminated by two Ferrarese artists of the theatelier who produced the Bible of Borso d'Este, at the end of the 15th century.
Origin: Written and illuminated in Italy in the late 15th century.
Presumably commissioned ca. 1494 as a gift to the church of St. Francis at Ferrara for which the cornerstone was laid in that year by Ercole I d'Este; the obit of his grandson, Federigo II Gonzaga on June 28, 1540 is in the Calendar; owned in 1916 by J. Meade Falkner; his sale (London, Dec. 12, 1932, no. 14); obtained from Dawson, 1937 (his Cat., p. 28, no. 231). - Keyword:
