Fragment of one column of a Italian Romanesque Giant Bible.
Text begins with Saint Jerome's prologue to Esther "Libru[m] Ester variis translatoribus constat e[ss]e vitiarum ..." on recto and continues with the beginning of Esther on verso "In diebus Assueri qui regnauit ab India usq[ue] Aethiopiam. sup[er] centum uiginti et septem p[ro]uincias ..."
Used at one time as a part of a binding; trimmed at top, inside margin with no continuous text due to trimming.
Layout: Written in 12 long lines (105 x 132 visible column text); ruled in lead.
Script: Written in Caroline minuscule; opening text of prologue and Book of Esther title (top half missing) 2-line decorated red capitals.
Decoration: Illuminated initial "I" inhabited with two figures on verso at start of the book of Esther; corner of large blue, red, gray, and gold initial at the beginning of the prologue on recto.
Origin: Written in Italy during the 12th century.
