Orthographic conventions, such as use of "x" for "s" in middle of word, and substitution of "ch" for "c", suggest Tuscany, possibly Pisa, as place of production.
Text in a clear Italian semi-gothic hand in brown ink by a single scribe; text and bounding lines lightly ruled in lead; section headings and paragraph marks in red; initials of some sentences touched in red; four illuminated gilt capitals on varying backgrounds of red, blue, green, and fuschia; two smaller gilt capitals; 17 small initials--most are red and blue, but four are gilt--cut out of...
Contemporary limp vellum binding, reinforced with strips of vellum ms. waste, the text of which is visible in brown and red; heavy thick brown leather sewing thongs; remnants of two pairs of leather ties; ms. titles on front cover and spine; cover title "Speculu[m] eccl[es]ie."
Ownership inscription on verso of leaf [2]: "Petri Maphei f[iliorum]q]ue] Hob: Hier[oni]mi et Amicorum."
Excerpt on recto of leaf [2]: "Augustinus super Psalmum XXI"; and extensive ms. marginal notes in same hand as ex-libris, presumably the hand of Maffei himself.
