Manuscript codex. Title from printed catalog. Collation: Parchment; 18(-1) 2-118 1210(-1 leaf, binding too tight to specify) 13-148 1514 16-208. Layout: Written in 25 long lines; ruled in brown ink with double column reserved on outer margins for larger initials. Script: Written in gothic textualis formata. Decoration 1: fol. 160v: full page illumination of the crucifixion on a tree with a pelican in her piety, a lion breathing on her cubs, and Mary and John the Evangelist, in gold, red, violet, blue, and green. Decoration 2: fol. 1r: King David elevates his soul, 17 lines high (advent); fol. 9r: the Nativity, 10 lines high; fol. 11r: Virgin and Child, 15 lines high; fol. 128v: Infant Jesus between Mary and Joseph with an altar below, the letter S as a green dragon, 8 lines high; fol. 136r: Christ at the resurrection, 8 line high (very deteriorated). Decoration 3: Decorated illuminated initials: fol. 73r: D as a blue dragon, 8 lines high; fol. 107r: T historiated with two gold dragons, 12 lines high; fol. 14: E, 9 lines high. Decoration 4: Flourished initials: alternating red and blue initials, flourished in red throughout, 2-3 lines high; minor initials in red, characteristically German. Sewing holes visible around miniatures and initials, evidence of previously attached protective silk curtains. Origin: Written in Germany in about 1250, Saints of Proper and illuminations suggest Rhine valley, possibly Cologne. Marginal suffrage to the Virgin added 15th century (152v-153r); collects added in German script, 17th century.
