Layout: Written in 32 long lines beginning on first ruled line; fol. 140r-144r in 19 long lines; fol. 204r-207v in 30 long lines beginning on the second ruled line; prickings visible occasionally on outer margins; ruled in lead.
Script: Written in protogothic textualis; fol. 140r-144r in gothic textualis formata clearly modeled on a proto-gothic exemplar, not especially use of half-unical "d"; fol. 204r-207v in gothic textualis; additions in various proto-gothic scripts.
Decoration 1: Historiated initial: fol. 140v (Christ on the cross in green, red, brown, and magenta).
Decoration 2: Decorated initials: (a) Large white vine stem initials in red, blue, orange, purple, and green; (b) 4-10 line smaller vine stem initials; (c) 1-7 line initials in the same colors throughout; (d) German style red initials in three different inks and hands dating from 12-14th centuries.
Origin: Written probably in southern Germany in the second half of the twelfth century before 1173, date of the canonization of Thomas à Becket (added in the Proper of Saints, fol. 170r). Presence of Kilian (fol. 176r) in the Proper of Saint indicated diocese of Würzburg. Addition of Masses for Bernard and rubric on fol. 199r indicate a Cistercian abbey. Belonged to Cistercian Abbey of Hohenfurt in Bohemia in 1282 or shortly thereafter; see dated note verso of flyleaf containing numerous Bohemian names: "Poizlau seruus domini, Wokkonis de Crumwenaw homicidium Hainrico iudici in Altouado a prefato Poizla eidem impositum in presencia domini Wokkonis et domini Adam abbatis ... in Altouado ob remedium domini Witigonis de Crumwenaw...
Recto of flyleaf, pen trails "domine et michi," etc., largely effaced even under ultraviolet light, may be partially in Czech.
Fol. 141r-142r, headings and marginal notes added in formal humanistic cursive in violet ink, 16th century; fol. 39r, in lower margin, "C + M + B +, 1556." This codex still in Hohenfurt in 1891, recorded "Xenia Bernardina", vol. 2, pt. 2, pages 192-193 codex LXXV (old shelf-mark on spine of this manuscript).
