Translated from the Latin: Speculum humanae salvationis. The Latin text is usually attributed to Ludolphus de Saxonia. The French translator is not identified. The present version (chapters 1-42 only) is an abridgement of the original.
The text is probably the same as that of Ms. fr. 1363 in the Musée Condé, Chantilly. The physical characteristics of this ms. are so similar to those of the Condé ms. as to make it seem probable that the two mss. were made at about the same time, possibly in the same scriptorium. The miniatures are similar in subject but quite different in execution. Cf. Litz-Per-drizet, Speculum humanae...
Layout: Written in 28 lines in double columns; ruled in violet ink; catchwords.
Script: Written in lettre bâtarde.
Decoration: 168 square miniatures; some fully colored, some partly grisaille, perhaps unfinished, within gold frames at the head of each column, following the iconographic conventions for chapters 1-42. Blue, green, and pink acanthus spray margins under the outer column of the verso of each folio in the presence of standard gold dentelle initials with white patterning on grounds of magenta and...
Origin: Copied and decorated in Flanders, approximately 1455.
Formerly in the library of Philip the Good of Burgundy, recorded in the inventories of 1467 and 1485. Recorded in the Burgundian library until 1577.
Formerly in the collection of Robert S. Holford and privately sold by his son, Sir George Holford to A.S.W. Rosenbach of Philadelphia.
