Collation: Parchment, fol. ii + 59 + i ; 18 210 (-1) 3-68 78 (-7-8 stubs only) 84 ; catchwords within rectangles with animal faces appended to the left ends.
Layout: Written in 18 long lines, fol. 54r-57v in 31 long lines; fol. 1r-53v ruled in pencil, fol. 54r-57v ruled in ink; fol. 53v partly reruled in ink, fol. 55v unruled, fol. 58r-59v frame ruled in ink (music ruling added mostly in red ink); prickings visible in outer margins.
Script: Written in Italian gothic textura; fol. 51r-53v in a Northern gothic textura, with use of of long terminal s and caroline type t, possible indication that this portion was copied from a pre-gothic exemplar; fol. 53r-59r in gothic textura by three other hands.
Decoration: fol. 15r: historiated magenta initial on blue ground 8 lines high depicting Christ on the Cross between Mary and John the Evangelist in gold, pink, blue, and orange, extended to form partial border of orange and blue ivy decorated with a dragon; red and blue initials 2 lines high; texts 23-27 have red initials only.
Origin: Written in northern Europe, perhaps Germany, in the 2nd half of the 14th century by a scribe with Italian training. Completed with addition of texts 23-25, possibly in Germany.
Bookplate of Louis H. Silver.
Pen trials on fol. 55v with "1521", possibly a date.
Inscriptions: "Bi. Rot 1687" and "Joachim Richard 1792" on front flyleaf.
Finger tabs on fol. 6 and fol. 15.
