Layout: Written in 36 lines in 2 columns; fol. 3r-6r written in 22 lines in 2 columns; ruled in brown ink. Script: Written in hybrida media; fol. 3r-6r written in hybrida formata; headins in script of text. Decoration: 5 historiated initials in the Proper of Time only: fol. 1r, 12 lines high (pink initial on a gold ground, historiated with the Coronation of the Virgin); fol. 9r, 8 lines high (blue initial P on a gold ground, historiated with the Nativity); fol. 77r, 10 lines high (blue initial R on a gold ground, historiated with the Resurrection); fol. 88r, 8 lines high (initial U, historiated... Origin: Written probably in Ghent, approximately 1470, by the Brethren of Jerome, as suggested by the binding and the calendar of the diocese of Tournai, for the use of a secular church; Proper of Saints and choice of sequences are to be found in printed Tournai missals. Armorial bookplate, gold-stamped leather of Eduard Hailstone. Former owner's inscription: fol. 1r: rubbed out, visible under ultraviolet light: "Missale istud reuenit ad mensam sancti spiritus in ecclesia sancti Michaelis grandauensis." This church rebuilt 1480 Inserted: Mass for Pharahildis on leaf inserted after fol. 12 in the Proper of Time added for Ghent use. Former owner's signature: "Bernarts" incorporating a notarial-like signum, 15th- or 16th-century on front pastedown. Former owner's inscription fol. 1r in modern hand "Tournai Missal, about 1470".
