- After the secularization of the Abbey of St. Matthias (1802) the codex was acquired by Dr. Leander van Ess of Darmstadt; it was then acquired with other van Ess manuscripts by Sir Thomas Phillipps. Collation: Parchment, i (former pastedown, now loose) + 92 leaves (fol. 92 now pastedown); 1-98 106 118 126 (last fol. is pastedown); quires lettered in modern pencil in lower right hand corner on first folio of quire.
Layout: Written in two columns of 38 lines, above the line. Ruled in dry point with double bounding lines. Prickings visible.
Script: Gothic script in several hands. Fol. 1v-89r in rounded gothic script (11th cent.), incipits in rustic capitals. Fol. 89v-90r and 91v-92v in 2nd hand, 12th cent., gothic script. Fol. 90v-91r in a 3rd hand, also 12th cent., gothic script. Short notes on fol. 89r in 2 other hands; one gothic, one a transitional script. Table of contents (fol. 1r) in 15th hand, gothic script.
Decoration: Primary initials (18 lines on fol. 52r; others are 9-10 lines) in red, some with yellow infilling, with interlaced and foliate ornament. Secondary initials (6-7 lines) in red with interlaced decoration; 1-line initials in red within text.
Binding: Light brown doeskin, decorated in blind tooling, over wooden boards. Bound with thongs (in three bands) pegged in. Two fore-edge clasps missing. Front paste-down from an Antiphonal (12th cent.). Leather tags glued onto folios on which new works begin as page markers. Possibly present binding dates to the abbacy of Johannes Rode (d. 1439).
Origin: Produced at the Benedictine abbey of St. Matthias in Trier in the second half of the 11th cent.
