Extent: 45 leaves : parchment, col. ill., port. ; 172 x 115 (114 x 55) mm. bound to 180 x 116-120 mm.

Note:

The work is dedicated to Pope Pius II (Enea Silvio Piccolomini). It later passed into the library of Thomas Thorpe and then into that of Sir Thomas Phillipps (his no. 7380). On inner front binding: "7380 Ph" in modern pencil. Title below, in pen ("Vita B. Francisci Patritii Senensis di Tarlati Ordinis Servorum BVM qui obiit 1326-"). Below, in pencil: "193/2/2/0." Pasted on spine: "7380."

Collation: Parchment, fol. 45; 1-410 54 (+1); quires signed a-e on lower right corner of last leaf, verso, of gathering.
Layout: 20 lines per page; ruled in dry point with double lines running length of the page on all sides.
Script: Humanistic book script in one hand.
Decoration: On fol. 1r, full illuminated border of bianchi girari with birds, putti and insects, with pink, green, and blue infilling and gold decorations. Historiated initial (6-line) with profile portrait of Blessed Francesco Patrizi (in habit, holding a book) and in the right border a female bust on blue background, reminiscent of della Robbia. At bottom center, Piccolomini arms, surmounted...
Binding: Limp vellum binding (wider at top); pastedowns missing; 2 sewn thongs; holes on fore-edge of binding for fasteners. Sewn endbands laced in. Title on spine: "Vita Fran[cis]ci Patri[-]ii Or[dinis] Ser[vorum], Et C[etera]."
Origin: Since the text was written by a Servite friar (cf. "ordinis nostri" on fol. 11r, 12v, 13v), it was probably produced at one of the Servite monasteries in the area of Florence. The dedication to Pius II provides a terminus ante quem of 1464. However, the fact that the arms on fol. 1r are surmounted by a bishop's mitre, rather than the papal tiara, has been interpreted to indicate that...
