Manuscript codex
Collation: 126 (paper): 1-10¹² + 11⁶.
Foliation: Contemporary foliation in ink, probably by the scribe, in upper right corner (i-cxxvi). Foliation supplied in Hindu-Arabic numerals by cataloger.
Catchwords: Horizontal catchwords to the right of center inside rhombus-like frames in red on folios 12v, 24v, 36v, 48v, 60v, 72v, 84v, 96v, 108v, 120v.
Watermarks: Three watermarks: two conjoined bull's heads in profile facing away from each other (very similar to WZIS DE3315-GMVIb.E.87._50); a horn (similar to Briquet BR 7676); a dragon (similar to WZIS DE4620-PO-124019).
Layout: Written in 20-30 long lines, usually above top line, but not consistently. Folios 24v, 62r (partly), 62v, 125r, 125v are in two columns, all of which contain tables of contents. Frame ruled in lead, with full-length vertical and horizontal bounding lines. Pricking marks visible on the outer margins of most leaves.
Script: Written by a single hand in Gothic cursive.
Decoration: 8-line boxed initials S, O, D in red, dark brown/black and purple with pen-flourished foliate borders in purple, which may have been added later and which are seemingly left incomplete, on folios 1v, 24v, 63r respectively; 2- to 3-line initials in plain red throughout; sentence initials highlighted in red; most rubrics in red; tables of contents entirely in red on folios 1r, 24v...
Binding: Romanesque, possibly original. Bound in full reversed leather over wooden boards, with three slit straps and endbands laced through channels and fixed with nails on the front of the board. The cover, the straps and the endbands seem to have been dyed red, which is now mostly faded. Tail endband and the sewing support closer to the tail are broken. Blind-tooling on front and back...
Origin: Probably written in Italy in the fifteenth century.
Former shelfmark: MS Y111.
Shelfmark: Lawrence, University of Kansas, Kenneth Spencer Research Library, MS C54.
In good condition except for yellowing and foxing on paper throughout, especially on the outer edges of the leaves. Bookworm damage throughout, especially worse on the first and last leaves, with some loss of text. Remnants of a parchment fragment on the head edge turn-in of the back cover, which possibly indicates that the manuscript originally had repurposed parchment pastedowns. Red stains...
Early history of the manuscript is unknown. Bookseller annotations on the inside of the front board: inscribed in pencil in the upper part: "No. 74529"; a piece of paper adhered to the lower half with a note in blue ink in a modern hand about the contents of the manuscript: "S. Isidorus Hispal[ensis] / Sententiarum libri III / De summo bono / User du XV s[iècle]." Additional annotations by a... - Keyword:
