Foliation supplied by cataloger. Signatures: Quires signed, possibly by the scribe, 1-26 in the upper right corner of the first recto of each gathering. Catchwords: Catchwords, most of which are underlined in red, in the lower right corner, to the right of the inner vertical bounding line on folios 12v, 24v, 36c, 48v, 60v, 72v, 84v, 96v, 108v, 120v, 132v, 144v, 156v, 168v, 180v, 192v, 204v, 216v, 228v, 240v, 252v, 264v, 276v, 288v, 300v. Watermarks: Watermarks present (unidentified). Layout: Written in two columns of 41-42 lines, below topline. Frame ruled in two columns in ink, with full-length vertical and horizontal bounding lines. Script: Written by Johannes Baldung in Gothic cursive. Decoration: 3- to 7-line initials in plain red at the beginning of chapters; sentence initials highlighted in red; rubrics in red or underlined in red; running titles, most of which are highlighted in red, at center in lower margins on the recto side of leaves indicating chapter numbers; guide letters visible to the left of the initials. Binding: Fifteenth century, possibly original. Bound in full alum-tawed leather over wooden boards, with four paired single sewing supports and two integral endbands at head and tail (Kapitalbünde, braided) made of cords laced through channels and adhered to the insides of both boards and secured with wooden pegs. Five transverse spine linings made of parchment adhered to the inside of each... Accompanying materials: Detached parchment text guard (300 x 63 mm), extracted from underneath the back pastedown in 1973 by William T. Mitchell. Origin: Written by Johannes Baldung probably in Schwäbisch Gmünd, Germany and completed in 1460: "Ioh[ann]es Baldu[n]g. Minor foxing on the leaves and bookworm damage, especially in the first quire. Flyleaves soiled with minor water damage. Minor bookworm damage throughout. Back pastedown cut from head to tail vertically and partly unadhered. Marginal annotations and manicules throughout, mostly by the scribe and mostly... MS E263 contains continuous loose sewing guards in each gathering: the center-folds are supported by approximately 10 mm parchment strips. These parchment strips are all repurposed fragments, seemingly coming from multiple but contemporary manuscripts, and most contain texts (unidentified). The front and back text guards of MS E263 are made up of repurposed parchment fragments. The front text guard is in situ and visible under the front pastedown, folded around the first gathering, with its text illegible. The back text guard, which was under the back pastedown and which was folded around the last gathering, was extracted after the acquisition of the manuscript by the University... The manuscript comes from the library of the Dominican Monastery in Schwäbisch Gmünd, Germany (Dominikanerkloster Schwäbisch Gmünd), now converted into a cultural center, Prediger Kulturzentrum. Title and contemporary ownership inscription in ink by a contemporary hand in the upper half of the recto of the front flyleaf: "Conve[n]t[us] Gamu[n]dien[sis] ord[inis] p[re]d[icatorum] [1484...
