Initial S with Virgin of the Apocalypse The iconography of the Virgin and Child on a crescent moon was inspired by the text of Revelation 12:1, which describes 'a woman clothed with the sun and the moon under her feet.' The liturgy that this initial begins remains to be determined. The reverse of this cutting contains a fragment of text that may be from the first response of the first nocturn of Matins for the feast of the Chair of Saint Peter (Feb. 22). This cutting can be dated to ca. 1480.
