Provenance: This leaf is from a portfolio compiled by The Foliophiles Inc. in 1928 and issued as a limited edition under the title "Specimens of Oriental Mss and Printing."
Provenance: The set of leaves belonging to Ohio University is number 13 of 120.
Provenance: The transcribed labels accompanying these leaves were originally written by The Foliophiles, Inc., a now-defunct New York association of rare book dealers that was also known as the Society of Foliophiles.
Provenance: Between 1925 and 1968 The Foliophiles disbound hundreds of historical texts and assembled them into several thematic portfolio sets.
Provenance: These were then issued in “editions” of between 15 and 200 leaves. Universities across America subsequently purchased these portfolios as teaching tools.
Provenance: While a small number of the selected leaves come from other cultures, the vast majority are from European texts. The collecting and marketing practices of The Foliophiles reflect the values of the members of the association and the contemporary American rare book market.

The following text is based on the original seller's label. FROM A MANUSCRIPT GULISTAN, or Rose Garden, of Sa’di, one of the most famous and beautiful poems in the Persian language
The date corresponds to 1563 of the Christian era
On the margins, running concurrently, are the Ghazals, or Lyrics, of Sa’di
The calligraphy is in the Shekasteh Nasta’liq style, and while not of great distinction, shows painstaking care and precision
The paper, like many of the preceding examples, is of typical Oriental quality, made from vegetable fibres and linen rags, sised according to one of many secret processes, and polished by rubbing, probably with a glass ball or shell
It is interesting to note that Persia learned paper making from the Chinese, and that Samarkand was famous for its paper as early as the 8th Century.
Specimens of Eastern Manuscripts and Printing
Gulistān, a landmark of Persian literature, is the most influential work of prose by the poet Saadi Shīrāzī (1210-1291/1292), written in 1258 CE.
It consists of a collection of poems and stories, often quoted for its wisdom. The book explores various human issues with an optimistic and satirical tone, offering advice for rulers and containing Sufi teachings.
