Strong emphasis throughout on worship of the Virgin suggests that perhaps this prayer-book was used by a woman, perhaps a member of a religious order; special reference to St. Benedict on recto of leaf [149] suggests that perhaps user was a Benedictine nun [?].
Text in at least three different gothic hands in brown and black ink on vellum, lightly ruled in graphite; capitals and captions in red; sentence initials touched in red; large ornamental two-tone capitals in red, blue, and green; at head of text is a large zoomorphic letter "O"--a serpent swallowing its own tail--in pink, rose, and gold.
Illustrated with a drawing of a bleeding red heart pierced by two green arrows and a long, two-handled saw, surmounted by an illuminated gold crown (verso of leaf [149]); preceding the Office of the Dead is a drawing of a skull (verso of leaf [125]).
Single lines of chant music arranged on black 4-line staves, with square notation in black; staves on verso of leaves [117] and [118] lacking notes.
A few miscellaneous marginal annotations; erasure of a line of text on verso of leaf [74].
