Title from first line of text; alternative title at head of text, added later in a different hand. Added 16th-century marginal inscriptions on recto of first leaf mention printed editions by Aldus and Paul Manutius in which Marlianus' index appeared, and suggest Jovius Alexander and Jovius de Ocelo et de Truimpilinis as possible editors or scribes. Written in an elegant italic cursive script in at least two hands; 29-34 long lines per page; some vertical catchwords; spaces left blank for initials, with guide letters; marginal notes. Leaves [37]-[67] contain fragments entitled "Fragmenta historica de Gothis," possibly Isidore of Seville's History of the Goths; leaf [68] contains a list of popes from Peter to Innocent VIII. Leaves [47]-[48] are blank, marking the change of scribe. Gap in the binding at front of ms. suggests that another text (perhaps the work related to the index, Caesar's De bello gallico itself) has been removed. Bookplate and shelfmark of the Schoyen Collection on inside back cover. Ms. notes and mathematical calculations on front and back endpapers and covers suggest that an earlier owner was an Italian merchant, probably a grain dealer. Inscription on front endpaper: "Dum tempus habemus operem bonum quoniam qualis vita finis ita."
