Generally attributed to Father Alonso de Molina, although similarities in handwriting lead Schwaller and others to believe it may be an early, unrevised translation of the Lectionary by the Franciscan Father Bernardino de Sahagún from the mid-16th century. Cf. J.F. Schwaller, "Guías de manuscritos en náhuatl," Estudios de cultura nahuatl 18 (1987): 323-26.
Decorated initials; Nahuatl text in black ink; Latin headings in red.
Note on front endpaper signed by Edward E. Ayer indicates that he purchased the ms. believing it to be a Molina translation of the Lectionary.
Inscription on leaf [1] from former owner Phelipe de Baldes to Adán Inquaci, an Indian.
