Manuscript codex.
Collation: Parchment, fol ii (i is pastedown) + 85 (foliated 1-85 in modern pencil; foliated xx.iiii.i.-xx.iiii.xix., .c.-.c.xix., xx.vi.-xx.vi.ixix., xx.vii.-xx.vii.xii, .c.xv.-.c.xix., xx.vi.-xx.vi.ii. in contemporary brown ink with final 5 leaves unfoliated) + ii (ii is pastedown) ; 1-108 122 134(-1, following fol. 82, without loss of text).
Layout: Written in 6 lines of text, above line, each under a four-line staff, or written in 18 lines of text. Text ruled in lead with inner and outer vertical bounding lines.
Script: Chiefly written in Gothic bookhand by 2 contemporary scribes (scribe 1 on fol. 1-80, scribe 2 on fol. 81-84r). Additions on empty staves by later scribes in a cursiva script on fol. 84r-v and humanist miniscule script on fol. 85r.
Decoration: rubrics in red and gray inks with most capitals touched in yellow and some in red; some initials throughout of yellow wash and penwork ornamentation including men, women, animals, beasts, fish, and leaves; some initials throughout of fine penwork alternating in blue with red penwork flourishes and red with blue penwork flourishes; decorated initials in pink and blue on burnished...
Music: Red 4-line staves with black square notation; 6 staves per page. Occasional corrections in a later medieval hand in brown ink, possibly by the scribe of fol. 84.
Binding: Calf over wooden boards; on each board, 2 triple-ruled borders in blind with corner fleur-de-lis and central cross and Arma Christi in gold; 4 raised bands and 5 gold-tooled fleurons on spine; evidence of clasps and catches (now lacking); trimming to later marginal notes in cursiva hand date this binding to approximately the 16th century.
Origin: Likely produced for use in the Cathedral Saint-Pierre-et-Paul in Troyes, France based on the large historiated initial of fol. 40v depicting St. Peter and St. Paul, the patron saints of the cathedral. The inclusion of offices for St. Sabinian, St. Mastide, and St. Lupus support the attribution to Troyes. Gold initial on fol. 26r for the office of St. Philip suggests at this manuscript...
