Title from Ullman and Hunt. Manuscript codex. Collation: Parchment: ii (i is pastedown; 12th century manuscript waste on parchment) + 142 (modern pencil foliation, 142 is pastedown); 1-48 56 6-188; horizontal catchwords in center of bottom margin. Layout: Written in 36 long lines; lead ruled. Script: Written in Southern semitextualis formata by one scribe; very similar to Rotunda except in form of a, which is single compartment; less compressed than usual, heavy shading, few ligatures/fusions. Corrected mostly by a second hand, with a few other corrections possibly from a third hand. Marginal notes and proofreading symbols by Coluccio Salutati throughout. Dots placed in margins... Decoration: f.1r has elaborate floral border in four panels, blue, green, vermillion, yellow, brown, and gold, with six miniatures. In opening initial, drawing of a Dominican (probably Giovanni Dominici himself, maybe even done by Dominici; see Hunt, page xxii); clockwise from top right: death in a Dominican habit; St. Philip[?] bearing a cross; another unidentified saint; an angel or saint in... Binding: Panel-stamped brown leather; evidence of clasps, now lost; rebacked. Front pastedown and flyleaf consist of a single large leaf from a 12th century Latin manuscript in a Carolingian script (2 columns, originally at least 39 lines and 337+ x 113 mm per column; leaf trimmed to 355 x 257 mm), apparently a sermon on a Sunday Gospel reading from Matthew. Origin: Written in Italy. One of the earliest copies of this text, which was written approximately 1405. Evidently sent to Salutati (who died in 1406) as a dedicatory present, because it contains marginal notes in Salutati's hand and a variety of cryptic symbols now known to be Salutati's editorial marks.
