Collation: Parchment, fol. iii (modern paper) + 42 + iii (modern paper) ; 110(-4, following fol. 3, without loss of text; -8, following fol. 6, without loss of text) 210(-3, following fol. 10, without loss of text; -7, following fol. 13, without loss of text) 3-46 510 ; quires signed viii-xii. Layout: Written in 30-34 long lines, above top line; fol. 16v has 39 lines in order to fit in text at the end of quire ix; frame ruled in lead. Script: Written by 2 scribes in Pregothic script. Scribe 1, fol. 1r-16v and 33r-42v; scribe 2, fol. 17r-32v. Decoration: Pen-flourished initials in red and blue on fols. 1-8. Initials in red, green, and infrequently blue on fols. 9-42. Binding: later (19th-century?) vellum over boards with manuscript spine title "Symmachus"; trimmed with some loss of text to marginal notes. Origin: Written in France in the second half of the 12th century. Quire signatures and note on fol. 33 ("xii[us] q[ua]t[er]n[us], s[ed] seq[ue]ns pr[ae]pon[en]d[us] e[st]") suggest that this was once part of a larger codex. David Ganz identifies Newberry Library's Case MS 129, containing Anticlaudianus, as part of this larger codex; the Newberry codex has a matching vellum binding and contains...
