Order of the poems in the Canzoniere: "First the sonnets, together with 14 and 63 (ballate), in the standing order, except that the order of the last 27 is as follows: A, 337-38, C, D, 357-59, B, 360-361. Then all the other poems, in the standing order, except that 11 and 149 (ballate) stand just before 366, which is followed by the ballata Nova bellezza in abito gentile"--Wilkins, Manuscripts... Fol. 54v, 57v-58r: "All four of the so-called 'Babylonian' sonnets, 114 and 136-38 - diatribes against the corruption of the papal court in Avignon - were obliterated in [this manuscript]"--Wilkins, Manuscripts of the Canzoniere. Collation: Paper (unicorn watermark), fol. ii (i is modern paper, ii is contemporary parchment) + 176 (foliated i-x in modern pencil, 1-166 in early ink) + i (modern paper); 1710 186; horizontal catchwords. Layout: Written in 32 lines per page; ruled, with horizontal lines in lead and vertical lines in ink. Script: Written in humanistic hand by Jacobus de Godis, signed "Et ego Iacobus de Godis scripsi MccccL" on fol. 163r. Decoration: On fol. 1r, a 5-line purple initial with white highlighting on a gold rectangular frame outlined in black with cusps; also in frame is a blue interlace design with ink floral decoration in the margin, intertwining vines, flowers in green, red, blue, and gold; on the lower margin is a coat of arms (barry of 6 argent and azure, a cheif or) within a green wreath with red pen scrolls... Binding: Quarter calf with brown paste paper over boards; gilt lettering on red morocco spine label: "Petrarca Sonetii M.SS." De Ricci describes the binding as "XVIIIth c. Venetian olive half-mor." Offset from printed waste inside front board suggests that a paper pastedown has been lost. Manuscript title on lower edge: "Petrarcha Scrito. Indice."
