Layout: Written in 19 long lines; frame-ruled in red. Script: Written in a Gothic cursiva formata bastarda hand; single compartment a, looped ascenders, f and s descend below line. Decoration: heavily illuminated outer borders of gold on each page, displaying flowers, birds, insects, animals, and grotesques and drolleries in various colors. 8 large arch-topped miniatures in gold and colors: St. John on the Isle of Patmos, with Father and Son in insert (fol. 1r); the Tree of Jesse (fol. 6v); the Annunciation depicting God, the Father, with Orb in desert (fol. 7r); the... Binding: mid 19th-century brown morocco over boards with blind stamped panels; 5 raised bands on spine; green ribbon marker; red watered silk doublures and flyleaves (adhered to first and last vellum flyleaves); gilt edges; binder's signature: "Capé." Housed in early 20th-century brown morocco solander case; gilt title on spine: "Horae Beatae Mariae Virginis : ms. on vellum, saec. XV... Origin: Produced for the Chasseigne family of Nevers, France in the early 16th century. Hours of the Virgin follow use of Nevers, and the Chasseigne family arms are present on fol. 6v. Herbert Kessler's 1967 description of the manuscript proposes that the manuscript was produced in the Bourdichon atelier around 1490 (see Ms348's collection file in Special Collections Research Center), but...
