Binding: 16th century. Limp vellum wrapper; remains of twisted leather closures on front cover. Script: Gothic rotunda (Spanish) Decoration: Opening formula is incorporated between two miniatures and "Don Phelippe" in illuminated text. (Don/Phe/lippe/ por la gracia de dios rey de Castilla, de Leon, de Aragon) The first miniature is the Virgin Mary and infant Jesus ; below five lines of text is a coat of arms with castle wall and lion (fol. 1v); Saint James the Moor slayer (Santiago Matamoros) in battle (fol. 2r) appears... Accompanying materials: With 1 seal (8 cm in diameter) attatched to multicolored twisted cord; red silk cloth to protect miniatures (20 x 30 cm). Origin: Written in Granada, Spain, in November of 1570. "Ciudad de Granada, sey s[illegible] dias del mes de nobiembre, año del nascimiento de nro. salvador Jesu rpo de mill y quinicto y seseta años" (fol. 38r). Shelfmark: Lawrence, KS, Kenneth Spencer Research Library, MS E289 In good condition except for some small losses on the parchment cover. Lead seal and silk overlay are detached. Historical repairs to tears and numerical annotations on front cover. Some worm damage and staining on fol. 38r which does not obscure text. Seal depicts Philip II(?) of Spain, with coat of arms on reverse. Previously sold to Editio Altera by Librería Anticuaria El Camino de Santiago, León, Spain.
