Cover boards warped. Many leaves shows various stains. Piece missing from f. 1, upper outer corner; appears to have been cut out, but with no evident loss of text. Trimming has caused loss of running heads and some marginal text. Fraying at edges has caused some loss of marginal text on f. 2r-v.
Origin: Written in Germany, ca. 1500 (Zacour-Hirsch).
Title from explicit (f. 199r).
"Therentius" appears at upper right corner of f. 2r (can be read through the missing section of f. 1).
Incipit: Natus in excelsis tectis Carthaginis alte / Romanis ducibus bellica preda fui / ... (f. 1r). (The manuscript begins with a six-line epitaph for Terence; it is followed immediately by the Argumentum for the Andria.).
Binding: Contemporary stamped pigskin over wooden boards. Remains of green cloth ties. "Terentius" written on front cover in capitals in what appears to be pencil and in a later hand. Edges of book block dyed blue.
Layout: Written in 16-20 long lines, with marginal and interlinear notations.
Script: Written in a humanistic script.
Decoration: 2-line to 5-line initials with foliate decoration in green, pink, brown, and yellow (f. 1r, 2v, 37r, 106v, 139r, 172v); red, green and blue initials throughout, some with penwork ornamentation in brown (for example, f. 7v, 60r), including one with an animal (f. 171r); red (f. 2v-90r) or blue (f. 82v-94r) used to indicate change of speaker.
Foliation: Paper, i (contemporary paper) + 200 + i (contemporary paper); [1-200]; modern foliation in pencil, upper right recto.
Sold by Herbert Langet Cie., 1953.
German notations on the inside upper and lower covers, in pencil and fairly recent in date, suggest that this manuscript was in the possession of a German library or book dealer. The notation on the inside lower cover appears to be in the same hand as the folio numbers.
