Manuscript codex
Collation: iii (modern paper, i is pastedown, ii and iii are adhered to each other) + 139 (paper) + iii (modern paper, i and ii are adhered to each other, iii is pastedown): 1¹⁴ (wants 1-3) + 2-9¹⁶.
Foliation: Three sets of foliation: contemporary foliation in ink in upper right corner (i-vixxxvi [136]) beginning with folio 4; modern foliation in pencil in lower right corner (1-4); modern foliation in pencil in upper right corner (10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100, 110, 120, 140, 147) skipping one folio between 40 and 50, and another one between 100 and 110, with numbers 140 and 147...
Catchwords: Horizontal catchwords in lower right on folios 11v, 27v, 43v, 59v, 75v, 91v, 107v, 123v.
Watermarks: Single watermark in the textblock: a bull's head with eyes and nostrils with a single line shaft above surmounted by a six-pointed star (similar to WZIS DE7800-PO-74485). The paper flyleaves do not bear any watermarks.
Layout: Written in 23-26 long lines, above top line. Frame ruled in lead, with full-length vertical and horizontal bounding lines. Pricking marks partly visible on outer margins.
Script: Written by a single hand in Gothic cursive with features of Bâtarde.
Decoration: 3-line initial T in red and blue on folio 4r; 2-line initials in alternating plain red and plain blue at the beginning of chapters throughout; paragraph marks in alternating red and blue throughout; guide letters visible to the left of initials throughout; 3- to 6-line blank spaces left for rubrics in the table of contents and at the beginning of chapters.
Binding: Modern, mid-nineteenth century. Quarter binding in brown leather and paste paper over paper boards. Corners strengthened with pieces of parchment. Blind-and gold-tooling on spine. Four raised bands. Wear and tear on all edges as well as the spine; scratches on both covers.
Origin: Probably written by a Gilibertus in eastern France or western or northwestern Switzerland in the mid-fifteenth century: "Gilibertus qui[?] [???]"-- colophon, folio 139r.

Le livre de bonnes meurs by Jacques Legrand in this manuscript is the so-called first redaction of the work that was completed in 1404, which is an adaptation of part of another work in Latin titled Sophologium, also by Legrand. It includes fifty-two chapters in five parts, with no apparent division of the text except for the separation of chapters in the table of contents and blank spaces...
In relatively good condition despite water damage throughout, which is particularly worse in the first half of the manuscript, with minor loss of text on the first two leaves. Minor bookworm damage in the last quire, with no loss of text. Two thirds of final leaf is torn and lost. Evidence of early repairs especially in the first quire. Ink bleed especially in the first three quires. Blue...
Early history of the manuscript is unknown. Unidentified sixteenth-century (?) inscription in ink in upper margin on folio 139v, possibly denoting ownership: "Iste liber est [???][us]? qui? sa[???]." Note by a modern hand in pencil on the verso of the second front flyleaf: "Beau manuscrit sur papier 269 ff. fui 14e s. traitant des vices et des vertus -- cet interessant texte en français bien... - Keyword:
