Manuscript codex
Collation: ii (modern paper, i is pastedown) + i (parchment) + 246 (paper) + i (parchment) + ii (modern paper, ii is pastedown): 1¹² (wants 1, 4, 5) + 2-5¹² + 6¹⁰ + 7-20¹² + 21¹² (wants 12, possibly blank).
Foliation: Two sets of foliation in upper right corner: older foliation in ink (2-3, 6-51, 112, 222), modern foliation in pencil (1-30, 40, 50, 55, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100, 110, 120, 130, 140, 150, 160, 170, 180, 190, 200, 210, 220, 230, 240). The description follows the modern foliation in pencil to the extent that it exists; the rest is supplied by cataloger.
Signatures: The first six leaves of quire 5 (folios 46-51) are signed b1-b6 (or v1-v6?) in lower right corner in early ink.
Catchwords: Horizontal catchwords to the right of center on folios 9v, 21v, 33v; vertical catchwords on the outer side of the inner vertical bounding line on folios 45v, 57v, 67v, 79v, 91v, 103v, 115v, 127v, 139v, 151v, 163v, 175v, 187v, 199v, 211v, 223v, 235v.
Watermarks: Three watermarks in the textblock: a circle surmounted by a line ending in a cross pattée (similar to Briquet BR 3039, very similar to Piccard DE4620-PO-22144); a circle surmounted by a line ending in a trifoliate flower (similar to the first watermark, unidentified); a bull's head with eyes but without ears, surmounted by a double line ending in a trifoliate flower (found only on...
Layout: Written in 27 long lines, above top line. Ruled in red ink, with inner and outer vertical bounding lines in lead; a second vertical bounding line is ruled on the left-hand side of each side of the leaves to create a separate column for the first letter of each verse.
Script: Written by at least two hands in Gothic rotunda.
Decoration: 11-line anthropomorphic initial A on folio 55r, perhaps depicting Virgil or the patron of the manuscript; 6-line foliate initial Q on folio 14r; two- to five-line initials in plain red or blue, marking the beginning of the books, on folios 1v, 3r, 4r, 5v, 7v, 8v, 10v, 12r, 14r, 23v, 33v, 44r, 69r, 83v, 84r, 97r, 97v, 110v, 111r, 127r, 127v, 144r, 159v, 173r, 173v, 188v, 189r, 205v...
Binding: Modern. Bound in full brown leather over paper boards, with two blind-tooled concentric frames and an X in the middle that reaches to the inner corners of the smaller frame on each cover. Five raised bands. Gold- and blind-tooling on the spine, with the title area dyed black.
Accompanying Materials: Historic paper mend (35 x 38 mm) removed from folio 129r.
Origin: Probably written in Italy and completed on September 26, 1467: "Die 26 Septembris 1467" -- colophon, folio 240v. The place of origin is reported as possibly Bergamo, Italy in previous descriptions based on the existence of the word Bergamo on one of the flyleaves and the style of decoration.

In good condition except for minor damage around the corners of leaves, especially in the first few quires. Pastedowns are stained from leather turn-ins. The spine-folds and center-folds are supported by approximately 10 mm parchment strips that are adhered to the outermost and innermost leaves of each gathering. Early repairs on the leaves, especially in the first quire. Minor bookworm damage...
Early history of the manuscript is unknown. Possible ownership inscription on the recto of parchment front flyleaf: "Iste liber est mei Guidonis de Albano qui frequentor?." Bookseller marks, possibly related to the 1957 Karl & Faber sale: an encircled number "12" in pencil on the upper half of front pastedown; a stamped number "12" in blue ink on a thin slip of paper adhered to the upper left... - Keyword:
