"Chronica regum Britanniae" is a modern title used by the bookseller and do not appear in the text. This is how the manuscript was known in the past and is still sometimes referred to at the Kenneth Spencer Research Library.
Pryce MS J1 has 5 parchment membranes of different sizes, ranging from 560 to 760 mm. The membranes are adhered head to tail, overlapping approximately 15 to 18 mm. Membrane 3 is further attached to membrane 4 by sewing with a green thread with approximately 20 x 30 mm additional pieces of parchment placed on outer sides. In relatively good condition except for the missing membrane(s). The manuscript is soiled, especially the first membrane. A large tear on the lower part of membrane 3 with loss of text. Imperfections on parchment throughout, including holes and knife wounds. Evidence of early repairs on parchment.
Early history of the manuscript is unknown. The manuscript seems to have been purchased by Bernard M. Rosenthal from Peter B. Howard of Serendipity Books shortly before the University of Kansas acquired the manuscript. - Keyword:
