Beginning of the first epistle of St. John, with attribution to the Blessed Sargis Shnorhali Vardapet.

Collation: Paper, single sheet.
Layout: Fol. 1r written in single column, 2 lines of majuscule script, 10 lines of miniscule bolorgir; fol. 1v written in 2 columns of 35 lines, miniscule bolorgir.
Script: Written in bolorgir script by one hand. Later annotations at foot of fol. 1r, likely fountain pen ink; repetition of first two lines of text.
Decoration: Recto of leaf (beginning of epistle) has ornate, intricate decoration with geometric and floral motifs, which occupies the top half of the leaf; other illustrations are marginal ornaments and depictions of birds; all decoration is characterized by bright colors including orange, magenta, blue, purple, and pink, with generous application of gold. Origin: Stylistically, the illuminations are closely similar to those in the Gladzor Gospels (created 1300-1307), which were painted in two locations: the scriptorium of Elegis or Noravankʻ and the monastery of Gladzor. However, this style is also present in manuscripts produced at other locations.
