Manuscript codex
Collation: 54 (paper): 1¹² + 2¹⁴ + 3²⁸. The quire structure is unusual; there are two gatherings of different sizes nesting in both the second and third gatherings. The conjugate leaves are as follows: 1-12; 2-11; 3-10; 4-9; 5-8; 6-7; 13-26; 14-25; 15-18; 16-17; 19-24; 20-23; 21-22; 27-54; 28-53; 29-36; 30-35; 31-34; 32-33; 37-52; 38-51; 39-50; 40-49; 41-48; 42-47; 43-46; 44-45.
Foliation: Modern foliation in pencil in upper right corner (1-54).
Signatures: Leaves signed 1-6 (folios 1-6); 1-9 (folios 13-21); 1-6 (folios 27-32); 1-8 (folios 37-44) in lower right corner of the recto of the leaves.
Watermarks: Watermarks present (unidentified).
Layout: Written in 31-32 long lines, above top line. Frame ruled in lead.
Script: Written by at least two hands in Anglicana formata.
Decoration: 3-line initial T in plain red on folio 1r; initials highlighted in red on folio 1r; phrases underlined in red on folio 1r; 1- to 3-line spaces left for initials in the rest of the manuscript.
Binding: Contemporary. Parchment case binding attached with primary tackets made from cords. Binding is worn, with parchment cover damaged.
Origin: Probably written shortly after 1459 in England.

MS C299 contains a copy of the "Kingmill's Course on Conveyancing" found in Cambridge, Cambridge University Library, Dd.5.23 (see John H. Baker, A Catalogue of English Manuscripts in Cambridge University Library. Woodbridge: Boydell, 1996. pp. 33-34 on the Cambridge manuscript and other manuscript copies of the text). MS C299 is closely related to Oxford, University of Oxford, Bodleian...
In good condition despite rodent damage along the spine and on the inner margin (no loss of text). Deckle edges visible. Nota and paragraph signs and few contemporary marginal additions and corrections. Short texts (unidentified) as well as pen trials and a mathematical calculation in contemporary hands on the inside of the covers.
The manuscript comes from the renowned Tresham Brudenell Library at Deene Park, England and very likely was part of the collection of Sir Thomas Tresham. It was purchased by Bernard M. Rosenthal at the 1967 Sotheby's auction. Possible bookseller marks in pencil on the inside of the front cover, perhaps by different hands: "XVI.a.19," "D.6.12" and "526." - Keyword:
