Layout: 29 lines per page; line-ruled in lead with double ruling on edges of text. Prickings visible.
Script: Fol. 1r-26r in a small English Caroline minuscule, with some additions in a later gothic hand (cf. fol. 19r-v). Prayer on fol. 26r-v in a later (13th cent.) gothic hand.
Decoration: 3-line initials in red, some with flourishes.
Music: Neumes over first line of text on fol. 1r.
Binding: Full modern leather, with blind tooling on edges of front and back covers. Title stamped in gold on spine: "Hymnarium. Cod. Saec. XII."
Origin: Produced in England in the 12th cent., probably for a monastic house (cf. "pro fratribus et sororibus nostris absentibus" on fol. 26v, and "chorus sacrarum virginum monachorumque omnium" on fol. 22r). Although this hymnal shares 57 hymns with the Use of Sarum, the text of these hymns often differs from that of the Sarum version, so it is unlikely that the hymnal represents the Use of...

2. fol. 25v-26r: "[rubr.] Preces in ieiunio [text] Oremus per omni gradu ecclesie. Sacerdotes tui indu[entur] ... Effunde frameam et conclude adv[er]sus eos qui per[sequuntur]. Dic anime mee."
