Collation: iii (modern paper, i is pastedown) + 11 (paper) + iii (modern paper, iii is pastedown): 1¹² (wants 12, possibly blank).
Foliation: Two sets of modern foliation in pencil: in upper part of the outer margin, now very faint, reflecting the former state of the manuscript (78-88) and in upper right corner (1-11). The description follows the modern foliation in pencil in upper right corner.
Watermarks: single watermark on the front and back flyleaves: reads "G. Fichtners Nachf"; single watermark in the textblock: a bull's head with shaft surmounted by a star (very similar to Briquet BR 15079).
Layout: Written in two columns of 40-43 lines. Unruled except for full-length vertical bounding lines for both columns ruled in ink.
Script: Written by a single hand in Gothic cursive.
Decoration: 2- to 4-line initials in plain red throughout; initials highlighted in red; paragraph marks in red; rubrics in red or underlined in red. Space left for a 4-line initial on folio 9ra.
Binding: Modern. Bound in paste paper in dark blue patterns over paper boards. Two paper labels adhered to spine: a rectangular label on the head and a spiked round label on the tail, which is inscribed "fol. ST3 [?]" in ink.
Origin: Probably written in Germany and completed in 1456: "Anno d[omi]ni 1456"-- colophon, folio 9rb.
Former shelfmark: MS Y139
Shelfmark: Lawrence, University of Kansas, Kenneth Spencer Research Library, MS D38

Early history of the manuscript is unknown. Two paper labels adhered to spine. Bookseller annotations and price in pencil in upper half of front pastedown, perhaps by different hands: "15th century," "De arte bene moriendi," "Ars Moriendi [in capital letters]," "Dated 1456 (Composition 1452)." An encircled number "102" and other annotations (now erased) in pencil in lower half of front... - Keyword:
