Manuscript gatherings
Collation: i (paper, pastedown) + 10 (parchment) + i (paper, pastedown): 1² (wants 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8) + 2⁸. Several quires missing at the beginning and the end.
Foliation: Modern foliation in pencil in upper right corner (2, 7, 9-16), inserted to signal the former state of the gatherings. Foliation supplied by cataloger.
Catchwords: Horizontal catchword in lower right on folio 10v.
Layout: Written in two columns of 34 lines, below top line. Ruled in lead, with full-length vertical bounding lines for both columns.
Script: Written by a single hand in Gothica textualis libraria.
Decoration: 2- to 3-line initials in alternating red and blue with penwork in the opposite color at the beginning of each chapter; chapter numbers in Roman numerals preceded with a pilcrow in red and blue; running titles in red and blue in upper margins (MA / TE to indicate Matthew). The blue (or, silver?) is almost completely faded in all of the leaves, now visible to the naked eye as pale gray.
Binding: Modern. Conservation pamphlet with cream paper covers tacketed to the bookblock.
Origin: Probably written in northern France in the second half of thirteenth century.

The passages in MS D40 correspond very closely to the copy of the Old French Bible found in Paris, Bibliothèque nationale de France, Département des manuscrits, français 899, folios 271vb-272vb; 276ra-276vb and 277vb-288va.
In moderate condition despite wear and tear due to previous use as part of a binding of another book. All leaves are soiled and damaged with holes and tears, with loss of text. The outer edges and corners of folios 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10 are cut off in different shapes.
