Manuscript codex
Collation: ii (modern paper, i is pastedown) + 30 (paper) + ii (modern paper, ii is pastedown): 1¹² (wants 1-5) + 2¹² + 3¹² (wants 12, possibly blank).
Foliation: Modern foliation in pencil in upper right corner (11, 21, 23-24, 27-28, 30).
Catchwords: Horizontal catchwords in lower right corner on folios 7v, 13v.
Watermarks: Single watermark on the front and back flyleaves: reads "Ticonderoga Text"; single watermark in the textblock: a fleur-de-lis surmounted by a crown (unidentified).
Layout: Written in 36 long lines, below top line. Ruled in lead, with full-length single vertical and double horizontal bounding lines. Pricking marks visible on outer margins of most leaves.
Script: Written by a single hand in Gothic cursive.
Decoration: A diagram in red and brown depicting different forms of government on folio 18r; 2- to 7-line initials in plain red; paragraph marks in red; sentence initials highlighted in red; rubrics underlined in red.
Binding: Modern. Bound in quarter parchment and blue paper, after 1882 and probably in North America, based on the watermark evidence on the flyleaves. The parchment used appears to be repurposed but the text is too effaced to be identified.
Origin: Probably written in Germany in the last quarter of the fifteenth century.
Former Shelfmark: MS Y91
Shelfmark: Lawrence, University of Kansas, Kenneth Spencer Research Library, MS C46
In relatively good condition except for missing leaves. Paper is very brittle and breaking off, especially along the outer edges and center-folds. Early repairs on the first quire, which is reinforced by adhering parchment strips to the center-folds of leaves.
The third item consists of selected passages from Poggio Bracciolini's Invectivae in Laurentium Vallam (also known as Orationes in Laurentium Vallam) as well as his Invectiva in felicem antipapam.
Early history of the manuscript is unknown. Bookseller marks on front and back pastedowns. - Keyword:
