- Note:
- Written by Jan van Kriekenborch at Ghent in 1485 (f. 1v and colophon). The French text is in littera bastarda in two columns, with many illuminated initals and line-fillers.
The two works are housed in separate 4-flap enclosures within a tray case, 44 cm.
"En ce livre sont contenus trois livres. C'est a savoir. Le premier le livre de la chasse nomme le Conte Phebus. Le second livre du jeu des eschiecs moralizie. Le tiers est le livre de chevalerie. Comment on doit faire chevalerie et comment il doit vivre et soy gouverner" - f. 1v.
The treatise on chess is missing from the present manuscript, or was never part of it. An old series of folio-numbers is almost continuous (only missing 2 leaves) between the two surviving works.
There are 1 large and 85 small miniatures by the Master of the Flemish Boethius (MS Bibliothèque Nationale MS néerl. 1). The foliate border on f. 101v includes the device of Louis de Bruges and the arms (added later) of Louis XII of France.
This manuscript is a companion to MS Typ 129. Both were made for Louis de Bruges (Lodewijk van Brugge).
Louis XII of France; Gontaut-Saint-Blanchard family (1873).
